Botanical and Floral Print in Fashion
What is Botanical Print
The Botanical Print derived from botanical illustrations where artists paint, draw or sketch plant species details, typically Botanical Illustrations are created in watercolour form. These illustrations are predominantly scientifically accurate whilst allowing for a few artistic adjustments and are likely to be found in books, magazines, art and more recently in fashion as a popular on-trend print for clothes. In many cases the accuracy of an artist’s botanical illustrations can be a matter of life or death, planets and flowers have long been at the heart of the medical profession but many look very similar so prior to photography if an artist’s depiction wasn’t completely accurate it could end up in disaster.
Top Tips on wearing Botanical Print
- Botanical Print can be worn across seasons just choose a different tone. For the colder months a more muted, darker tone botanical print maybe with a focus more on plants than flowers would be well suited. Then in summer months the primary colour bright floral prints would be perfect.
- Add an extra element to your work wardrobe with a Botanical Print blazer. Classic and work approriate but definitely more exciting and on trend than the standard monotone suit many lean towards.
What is Floral Print?
Floral Print is often more colourful and less scientifically accurate in comparison to Botanical Print. The floral print has been in and out of trend throughout the years in multiway different ways from specific flowers to floral print bags or floral decorated shoes.
Different Types of Floral Print
Daisy print is the floral pattern of the moment. Experts believe that we lean towards daisies not because of the beautiful print but because of what the daisy symbolises. The daisy reminds us of flower gardens, magical fields and happy sunny days, being out with nature and care free. Many of the seasons best selling dresses have featured a daisy print.
In a similar way that daisies invoke a deeper thought so does the hibiscus print. Hibiscus is traditionally associated with Hawaii and the Hawaii shirts but has quickly been picked up by fashion brands and the hibiscus print can be seen on multiple floral tote bags or dresses in Summer.
Arguably paisley print is one of the most popular floral prints out there. It’s bohemian feel peaked in the swinging sixes and has been revived multiple times since.
The vintage floral print many associate to their grandmothers curtains but the fashion world has modernized this traditional style and throughout the year you will see floral dressing. Vintage floral print tends to be slightly darker than say the daisy print and as a result, makes the perfect print for winter outfits.
Japanese Inspired Print
The cherry blossom print originated in Japan and has remained a stable amongst floral patterns. The Cherry blossom offers a delicate approach to the ever-popular floral print trend.
Floral lace was used all the way in the 15th century to decorate garments. The lace material was created to add layers and interest to outfits and the cut out floral decoration helped to jazz up the otherwise plain fabric. Floral Lace is incredibly popular amongst those after a more traditional wedding dress, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge used floral lace for her wedding dress which helped the popularity of the fabric peak in 2011. Again in 2018 at the presentation of her newborn son Louis, Catherine choose floral lace. It’s a popular elegant material that will stay in style for the foreseeable future.
