Kicking off our Curate Christmas at Home series, House of Dandelions founder Rachel shows us how to create a stunning festive wreath.
This year more than ever we appreciate the simpler things – the luxury of home and the joy of family and friends. To inspire creativity this festive season, we’re launching Curate Christmas at Home: a three-part series where creative experts share their tips and advice on how to make this Christmas the best it can be.
Our first expert? Rachel Bull, the founder of House of Dandelions, who’s teaching us how to make an impressive festive wreath at home. An expert in floral styling and workshops, Rachel loves making people happy with flowers – whether that’s by creating a simple, seasonal bouquet or an enormous floral arch installation.
Taking inspiration from the changing seasons, gardens and the great British countryside, Rachel’s floristry style is natural and romantic. Sustainability is also at the heart of her designs; she works foam free, promotes eco-friendly practices and sources her flowers from local growers in the South East as well as London’s New Covent Garden Market.
We caught up with Rachel to discuss materials and decorations.
Where should we look for supplies?
A lot of this can be bought easily online from craft shops or eBay. If you don’t have access to a florist or a flower market, you could look on Etsy or forage lovely things from your own garden or nearby woodland. That’s what is so much fun about these wreaths – you can really personalise them.
What’s your favourite greenery to use?
I love creating wreaths with blue spruce, eucalyptus, rosemary and dried grasses. Using all this foliage together creates a beautifully textured look and really elevates the design to a professional level.
My favourites are pinecones, pampas grass, dried honesty, bleached ruscus and champagne asparagus fern to add a bit of festive sparkle. Before attaching them, I always tie on my hanging ribbon – it helps me remember where the top is!
